Connecticut Information

Early in the 17th century, Dutch explorers set up trading posts along Connecticut's coastline, and Puritans from nearby Massachusetts established the first permanent settlements there in 1635. A few years later, the Connecticut Fundamental Orders established the colony's democratic system of government; more than a century later, in 1787, this document would serve as a model for the writers of the United States Constitution. With its proximity to protected harbors along the Long Island Sound, Connecticut became a center of industry and trade, producing both consumer goods and military products for the colonies.
