An island nation in eastern Asia, Japan is the sixty-second largest country in the world; its inhabitants account for about 2.97 percent of Asia's population. Japan's population density is about 870 persons per square mile. Japan is a constitutional monarchy, and its emperor is the ceremonial head of state. The country of Japan is comprised of four primary islands - Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu - and many smaller islands.
