Italy is the tenth largest country in Europe, and its inhabitants account for about 8.10 percent of Europe's population. Italy's population density is about 523 persons per square mile. The spine along Italy's boot consists of the Appenine mountains that separate the coastal areas along the Adriatic Sea in the east from the coastline of the Tyrrhenian Sea in the west. In the north, the Italian Alps rise along the borders with France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia. Italy also includes the two Mediterranean islands of Sardinia and Sicilia, as well as several smaller islands.
