Delaware Information

Delaware, even though it is the second smallest state in land area, has played an outsize role in United States history. Although Europeans of various nationalities explored the area, it awaited the Swedes, in 1638, to establish a permanent European settlement. The colony came under Dutch authority in 1655, but was annexed by the Pennsylvania colony in 1682. Later, in 1787, Delaware became the first state to ratify the brand new United States Constitution, and its state nickname is "The First State". Southern Delaware's fertile farms produce poultry, soybeans, corn, vegetables, and diary products.
