West Virginia Information

West Virginia is a mountainous area first settled by Native Americans. It became the 35th state in 1863 and opposed secession during the Civil War. Discovery of coal deposits promoted industrialization in West Virginia. However, the mining is done under difficult conditions and has produced poverty and illness. West Virginia is currently seeking to build a tourist industry with its culture, mountain crafts, and natural beauty. White-water rafting has become a popular adventure activity.
