Floor lamps do provide some safety concerns. The heavy tops are susceptible to toppling over, causing damage to the lamp and possibly its surroundings. Additionally, most torchiere lamps use halogen bulbs, which become extremely hot while in use.
A torchiere is a type of floor lamp which has an upturned shade, casting light onto the ceiling of a room. The light reflects off the ceiling and effectively lights the entire room. A torchiere uses either fluorescent or halogen light bulbs.
The standards were set to go into effect in January and gradually phase out incandescent and halogen bulbs used for items such as bathroom vanities, recessed lighting and candle-shape lights.
