Washington DC Information

Located on the northeastern bank of the Potomac River, Washington, DC is built on land that was ceded by Maryland and Virginia during the late 18th century. Its location was selected in a compromise between Northern and Southern state interests. It is the seat of the United States government and a symbol of the nation's history. President George Washington appointed French architect Pierre L'Enfant to design the city, which features a horizontal and vertical street grid pattern with diagonal avenues. The National Mall and Tidal Basin, a large park area located in the heart of the city, is lined with museums, monuments, imposing government buildings, and cherry blossom trees.
