The state of Tennessee was named after the Cherokee town named Tanasi. It became a state in 1796 and was the last state to join the Confederacy. Tennessee endured many years of hardship after the Civil War; however, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) was funded in 1930 and supported industrial development with its hydropower. Tennessee is home to Nashville's country music and Memphis' blues.
