Quaker William Penn and a group seeking religious freedom established Pennsylvania in 1682. German and other immigrants were later attracted to its fertile soil, water power, and woodlands. After playing a role in independence from Britain, Philadelphia was the capital of the new country from 1790 to 1800. Pennsylvania cities developed into industrial centers and produced textiles, ships, and iron and steel. Today Pennsylvania is still a leader in steel and coal production.
